The Peugeot 103, launched in 1971, has become a legendary moped today.
Produced in many versions, some are rarer or, at least, have a stronger “nostalgic impact” than others… the Peugeot 103 Land is one of them.
A “military” version of the SP, the Peugeot 103 Land was hugely popular with high school students during my teenage years… a Land and an “US” satchel as a school bag… does that ring a bell?
Peugeot 103 Land mopeds in good condition are increasingly rare these days, and we often start with a very “mature” base, or more simply, an ordinary SP that we “accessorize.”
This Peugeot 103 Land is no exception… while “photographically” appealing, a quick inspection reveals that this machine has been worn out to the extreme… I had rarely seen that on a moped!
Here is a photo of the starting point, don't be fooled by the rather flattering appearance… a quick glance at the entirely bent fork gives you an initial diagnosis of the overall condition, not to mention the missing parts.
We can talk about a complete restoration here:
disassembly of the entire frame and engine,
engine overhaul with a slight “preparation,”
chemical stripping, micro-blasting of the frame,
zinc plating of all screws,
“dry fit” assembly to perfect alignments/adjustments,
“automotive-grade” paint using the exact shades of khaki and matte black,
total restoration of the spoked wheels for this model, replacing the mag wheels,
assembly of the entire unit using new consumables,
engine assembly.
