Workshop tip: thoroughly clean the grooves of your piston rings before reassembly. They are often filled with carbon buildup, which will prevent the new rings from seating properly and therefore from performing their function. You can use an old ring as a scraper.

Tip 2: always check your end gap when installing piston rings, even new ones. For AV7 engines, the end gap is 0.10 min to 0.40 max. File down new rings slightly if they are too tight, and replace them if they are out of spec.
