Model: 3800
History: This 3800 is among the first manufactured when Motobécane took over the brand.
It is still completely consistent with the old 3800s, except for the golden pinstripes that have disappeared, due to industrial production.
However, it is a beautiful model with the 3800 engine, the top of the line.
Options: None.
What was done to this 3800:
We started from a completely out-of-order base, the photos in the slideshow will confirm this. The work was more like a reconstruction than a true restoration!
Chassis
The paintwork was entirely redone by powder coating, as it was originally, after being stripped and sandblasted, piece by piece.
Note that some parts, too heavily corroded by rust, were replaced. Indeed, it is impossible to apply putty when powder coating. Consequently, you either need parts in good condition or accept a slightly "orange peel" appearance in a few places despite the paint layer applied. I still prioritize preserving original parts, which are of much better quality than current remanufactured ones!
The chrome parts are new or re-chromed,
all the screws were re-zinc plated,
the rims, spokes, and tires are new,
the plastic parts (footboard, handles, seat, lights, beam trim) are new,
the decals were replaced identically,
the accessories (tools, pump, bell) are present and functional,
the front brake pads and rear brake linings are also new,
finally, the sheaths and cables were replaced with new ones.
Engine side
The engine was treated according to preparation 2:
Disassembly, cleaning, and micro-blasting of all engine parts,
Replacement of bearings (engine and clutch), seals, and engine-side oil seal,
Replacement of all screws with new zinc-plated original screws,
Installation of a new 41 cylinder/piston with 3 transfers, the cylinder was painted with high-temperature gloss black paint to maintain the engine's original look,
Clutch overhaul,
Fuel pump overhaul,
Cleaning of fuel hoses,
Carburetor overhaul and cleaning,
Replacement of the fuel return hose to the tank,
Ignition overhaul and adjustment, installation of an electronic capacitor,
Replacement of the spark plug wire and spark plug,
Installation of a new air filter and reaming of the filter chimneys to match the new cylinder,
Replacement of engine support rod silent blocks,
Replacement of the decompressor rod,
the exhaust pipe is new,
all engine plastics: headlight covers, flywheel, and fuel tank are new.
When riding, it's a classic 3800, so no surprises. However, the engine preparation work makes it much more responsive and torquey. It is in the break-in period, has good power (a small rocket according to my test rider 🙂 and brakes very well.
The photos in the slideshow below show you the details of the work done to achieve the final result.
NEWS: On Saturday, January 21st, this moped joined its new owner. It will live happily ever after across our borders, alongside a superb collection of Citroëns!
I wish Maurizio much pleasure on his next rides and I thank him again for his trust.
